Maritime Philosophy Friends

Maritime Philosophy Friends meets once per week to learn about philosophy and critical thinking. We discuss a wide range of topics, including ethics, metaphysics, aesthetics, logic, and current events.

Classes are divided by age group: 10-13 and 14-18, and there are in-person and online options available for each group.

These classes are perfect for curious adolescents who enjoy intellectual challenges.

Philosophy

Life is full of mysteries.

Does God exist?

Do we have free will?

What is the meaning of life?

Is morality objective or subjective?

Can AI systems become sentient?

Do animals have rights?

Is time real or an illusion?

These questions are deeply interesting and important. And yet, there is no unanimous answer to any of them. So, what are we to do? Philosophy, of course! We do philosophy when we try to answer these puzzling questions (and many others) using logic and critical thinking!

What We Do

Maritime Philosophy Friends facilitates weekly philosophy classes for students aged 10-18 in Halifax, NS. Classes are available in-person and online. All you have to do is  show up ready to discuss philosophy with your peers.

Each class focuses on a philosophical issue or theory. We start each session by getting familiar with the issue or theory of the week, before spending the bulk of our time together critically examining it.

Classes

1

Philosophy with Children and Teens

Children and adolescents are natural philosophers. I give them a structured environment to explore answers to classic and modern philosophical questions with their peers and a professional philosopher.

2

Small Class Sizes

Our sessions are always lively, with plenty of healthy debate and idea sharing! Young learners simply find philosophical topics fascinating and are eager to discuss them with their peers. I keep class sizes small, so everyone can have a voice.

3

Online Sessions

Can't make it to an in-person session? No problem! Each week I run multiple sessions on Google Meet (which is free and easy-to-use). Our online sessions cover the same topics discussed in our in-person meetups.
